An Island In Time: A Local History Talk with Sharon Dunn

An Island In Time: A Local History Talk with Sharon Dunn In-Person

Join us to learn all about Bound Brook, both its past and its present, with author and poet Sharon Dunn!

A book sale and signing will follow the talk.

Bound Brook Island in Wellfleet and Truro is not only a rural paradise secluded in the Cape Cod National Seashore, it is one square mile rich with history.  Arriving in the early 1990s to spend summers with her family in one of the island’s four original antique Cape houses, Sharon Dunn hiked the island’s hills and ravines, its forgotten roads, and came upon cellar holes where houses once stood.  Why was Bound Brook Island no longer an island?  Why did its thriving community of 150 inhabitants in 1850 dwindle to none by 1910? Why do photos from the early 1900s show a landscape bare of vegetation?  Research in town records, county deeds and censuses turned up surprising details about the island and the families that lived there. An Island in Time spans the island’s creation 16,000 years ago and ends in the 21st century, with its summer people, its artists and intellectuals, and its future in a warming world.

Sharon Dunn is a poet and nonfiction writer.  She has published a memoir Under a Dark Eye: A Family Story, as well as two books of poems, Refugees in the Garden and My Brother & I.  She was editor of the literary journal AGNI for ten years.
